How to wash your wig like a Professional Wig Stylist

Updated: Apr 4

Here are the step-by-step instructions for washing your wig like a professional:

1. Begin by brushing out any tangles from the wig using cool or lukewarm water.

2. Fully wet the wig by gently squeezing water through the hair and the cap.

3. Apply shampoo by squeezing it into your hands, creating a lather, and gently working it through the hair downwards. Ensure the shampoo is thoroughly worked into the wig, including the cap.

4. Rinse the shampoo out thoroughly, running your fingers through the hair to remove any residue. It’s important to remove all the shampoo, so take your time.

5. After shampooing, lightly towel-squeeze the wig to remove excess water.

6. Apply conditioner, focusing on the mid to end of the hair to avoid the cap area. Let it sit for a few minutes if extra moisture is needed, but not more than 30 minutes.

7. Rinse out the conditioner thoroughly, working downwards and gently squeezing the hair.

8. Once rinsed, gently towel-squeeze again to remove excess water.

9. Wrap the wig in a towel and gently blot dry to further remove moisture.

10. Dry the wig on a wig head, pinning it securely avoid pinioning lace sections and using conditioning spray before gently brushing out any tangles. Be gentle to avoid excess shedding.

11. Allow the wig to air dry for a few hours or overnight, brushing it into your desired style as it dries.

12. Set the part with a comb and adjust if necessary while the hair is still damp.

13. If the part dries in a position you don’t prefer, spray the root area to reset it with your comb.

14. Tilt the wig head back to allow the hair to air dry away from the face, finishing the prepping process.
